On Friday, 9/6/24, SHSAA took part in our annual Homecoming festivities. The day started with our “Legends Luncheon” where we honored Alumnus of the Year recipients. Chris Henry was honored as this year’s recipient. District administrators, SHS administrators, and past recipients were also in attendance. After the luncheon, SHSAA participated in the Homecoming festivities by hosting a tent and tailgate during the annual parade.
On Tuesday, July 23rd, the Alumni Association was able to raise over four thousand dollars for the scholarship program. The outing was organized by Dick Chew and his team of volunteers.
There were 77 scholarships awarded for the 2024 school year. Over $97,000 were awarded during our annual banquet on May 20th, 2024. Thank you to all the donors and sponsors who make this incredible event possible.
On September 29th, 2023, SHSAA hosted our annual “Legends Luncheon” where past Alumnus of the Year recipients are invited to attend. This year’s keynote speaker was 2023 Alumnus of the Year, Jack Christy. Also in attendance were several of the board members, SHS principal Amy Boone, Asst. superintendent Jane Pollard, superintendent Dr. Patrick Spray and many of our past recipients of the AOY. Past recipients in attendance were: Jack Christy, Jeff Kellams, Jay Danner, Carole Wade Myers, Neal Puckett, Ruth Ake Mercer, Steve Harnedy, Dave Shaffer, Bill Kiesel, and Rex Joseph
On May 22nd, 2023, SHSAA held their 33rd annual scholarship awards banquet. This year, the association handed out over 103 thousand dollars in scholarships to 81 seniors, bringing the total to 1.3 million dollars. Jack Christy, the 2023 alumnus of the year, was the keynote speaker. With all the students, their families, many of the alumni donors, and the student organization such as Cardinal Cadre and National Honors Society in attendance, the event held just under 500 people.
On February 25, 2023, the SHS Alumni Association partnered with the high school to host our first ever, Comedy for a Cause event. Performers included Samuel Owens, Jamahl Keys, and Drew Thomas. Proceeds benefited the SHSAA scholarship program as well as the SHS athletic and performing arts programs.
SHSAA was busy during this year’s Homecoming on 9/16 and 9/17. On Friday, 9/16, SHSAA hosted the annual Alumnus of the Year “Legends Luncheon” Banquet. Current SHS and Perry Township administrators were in attendance as well as past recipients. This year, the keynote speaker was 2022 Alumna of the Year, Kelly Sawyers. Later that day, SHSAA particpated in the annual Homecoming Parade and alumni tailgate. The following day, 9/17, SHSAA hosted our annual All-Class Reunion for alumni to visit and reconnect.
Lots of familiar faces were in attendance at this year’s Ray and Cindy Bertram Golf Outing, held on July 12th, 2022. Thanks to all those who attended to help raise over five thousand dollars to give out in scholarships in the spring.
On Monday, May 23rd, the SHS Alumni Association awarded over 90 thousand dollars in scholarships to 79 different seniors. This amount brings our total 1.2 million dollars since our inception in 1991. Many of the donors and sponsors were in attendance as well as the scholarship recipients and their parents/guardians. The keynote speaker for the evening was Kelly Sawyers, SHS Alumna of the Year. Music was provided by the SHS orchestra. Thanks to all the donors and volunteers who made this event possible.
On Friday, October 1st, 2021, Southport High School celebrated their annual homecoming. Many alumni enjoyed participating in the parade while others enjoyed watching it from our tailgate party.
On Tuesday, July 13th 2021, the Southport High School Alumni Association hosted our annual Ray and Cindy Bertram Alumni Golf Outing. Even some rain didn’t stop this group from raising thousands of dollars in scholarships funds and having some fun along the way.
On October 8th, 2021, SHSAA hosted the annual Alumnus of the Year “Legends” Luncheon. The current Alumnus of the Year recipient, Dr. Randal Caldwell, was honored and served as the keynote speaker. In attendance were members of SHS alumni association, SHS Principal Brian Knight and vice principal Amy Boone, Superintendent Pat Mapes, and former AOY recipients: Ruth Mercer, Phil Borst, Jay Danner, Steve Harnedy, Cindy Bertram, Peg Warner, and Neal Puckett.
On Saturday, May 8th of 2021, Southport High School dedicated and renamed the tennis courts after SHS great, Steve Cline. Coach Cline served as a head SHS tennis coach for 36 years (from 1965-2001). His combined boys and girls record was 753 wins to only 420 losses. He is a member of the Indiana High School Tennis Hall of Fame and has been inducted into the SHS “Wall of Fame.” Many of Coach Cline’s family, friends, and former players were in attendance at the dedication.
In September of 2020, Jay Danner was honored as the Alumnus of the Year. Jay is a 1970 graduate of SHS. As an entreprenuer, Jay owns his own business, Classic Golf Games and continues to serve the Southport Community, serving as SHSAA president for a term. The Men’s 1990 Basketball team was honored during the halftime of the boys’ game on Friday, February 20th 2015. Thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate this storied team and honor their historic coach, Mr. Bill Springer.
In February of 2013, the Alumni Association, in conjunction with the Southport High School Athletic Department, retired SHS basketball great – Louie Dampier’s number. Thanks to all those who came out and enjoyed the festivities. Louie was in attendance to accept the honor. The night was truly special and we are honored to have Louie’s jersey hanging in the rafters of historic Southport High School Fieldhouse.

On January 31st. 2014, the Association honored the 1980 Girls Basketball State Champions. Members of the championship team were in attendance and a banner was hung from the rafters in their honor.
